What Trail Mode Actually Does

The visual layer, on its own. Trail geometry, taper, glow, and colour, tuned until motion reads at phone size.

Trail Mode puts the light path first. Instead of a mechanic that produces an outcome, the subject of the video is the motion itself: how a stroke of light follows the ball, how it tapers, how long it survives, and how it looks against a dark frame.

The trail layer is drawn over the balls, which is why a well-tuned trail reads as a continuous ribbon rather than a smear behind a dot. Width, taper, opacity, and glow are all separate controls, so you can build anything from a hairline streak to a thick neon ribbon.

It is also the layer that makes every other mode more legible. A crowded spawner run, an escape arena, a spiral track: all of them become easier to follow when the motion leaves a visible path.

How A Run Plays Out

The exact sequence the engine runs in this mode, from the first frame to the moment the run resolves.

Points are recorded along the path

The trail samples the ball position either on a time interval or by distance travelled. Distance sampling keeps the stroke even when the speed changes, time sampling stretches the trail when the ball accelerates.

The stroke is built with a taper

Starting Width and Ending Width give the ribbon its shape. A wide head narrowing to a point reads as direction, an even width reads as a drawn line.

Colour and glow are applied

Rainbow Trails cycles the palette along the stroke, Custom Trail Color pins it, and Trail Glow adds the bloom that makes a neon trail carry against a dark background.

The trail decays or persists

Length sets how much of the recent path survives. Infinite Trails turns the decay off entirely, which keeps the full path on screen for the whole run.

Light against dark stops a scroll

A bright saturated stroke on a near-black frame is the highest-contrast thing in a feed. That contrast is doing the work in the first second, before any mechanic is understood.

The path shows the history

A trail tells the viewer where the ball has been, so a run reads as a route rather than a series of unrelated bounces.

Loops are seamless

Trail-led motion has no scoreboard and no ending state, which makes it straightforward to build a loop that repeats without a visible seam.

It improves every other mode

Because it is a layer rather than a mechanic, the same tuned trail can be carried into spawner, escape, or spiral runs as part of a channel look.

Thick trail, high glow, dark background, single ball. The clearest expression of the mode and a reliable loop.

Build Your First Trail Mode Video

The order that works. Following it out of sequence usually means retuning settings you already set.

    Start from a dark frame

    Set the background before the trail. Trail tuning is entirely relative to what is behind it, so a light background invalidates every later decision.

    Set thickness and length

    Get the ribbon proportions right first at phone size. A trail that looks elegant on a desktop preview is often too thin on a phone.

  3. 3

    Choose the sampling

    Use distance sampling for an even stroke, or time sampling if you want acceleration to stretch the trail visibly.

    Add glow last

    Tune shape and colour before touching glow. Glow hides geometry problems in the preview that reappear after compression.

    Loop and export

    Find a point where the motion matches the opening frame, cut there, and export. Save the trail settings as a preset so every future video shares the look.

Settings That Make The Difference

  • Distance-based sampling is the safer default. It keeps the stroke consistent whether the ball is crawling or flying.
  • Ending width slightly above zero avoids the sharp point that compression tends to break up into artefacts.
  • With infinite trails on, turn on the border so overlapping strokes stay readable instead of merging into a block.
  • Rainbow trails work best on a single ball. On many balls at once the palette averages out and the frame turns grey.
  • Save the tuned trail as a preset and reuse it across other modes. Consistent trail styling is what makes a channel look deliberate.

What Breaks A Run

  • A light background, which removes the contrast the whole mode depends on.
  • Maximum glow with maximum thickness, which blows the stroke out into a solid shape with no visible motion.
  • Long trails on many balls with no border, which fills the frame with an unreadable mass.
  • Tuning only on a desktop preview. Thin strokes that look precise on a large screen disappear on a phone.

Why sampling method changes everything

The trail is a series of recorded points, and how those points are spaced decides how the stroke behaves. Distance sampling records a point every time the ball travels a set distance, so the stroke has constant density regardless of speed and a fast ball simply produces a longer trail. Time sampling records on a clock, so a fast ball spreads its points further apart and the stroke thins and stretches.

Neither is correct in general. Distance sampling is right when the trail is the subject and you want a clean consistent ribbon. Time sampling is right when speed is the subject, because the stretching is itself the information you want the viewer to read.

Surviving compression

Short-form platforms compress aggressively, and glowing thin strokes on dark backgrounds are exactly the content that suffers most. Fine gradients band, soft glow smears, and hairline strokes break up. Tuning against that is mostly a matter of keeping strokes thick enough to survive and avoiding a taper that runs to a hard point.

Contrast helps here as well. A saturated stroke against a near-black background survives compression better than a mid-tone stroke against a mid-tone background, because the encoder has more signal to preserve.

The practical check is to review an exported file on a phone rather than judging the live preview. The preview renders at full quality, and the audience never sees that version.

Trail Mode Questions

Trail Mode focuses on rendering the visual paths that balls leave behind. By utilizing thick, glowing WebGL trails and custom post-processing filters, it transforms simple runs into glowing neon light animations. In the Creator Studio, you can adjust the trail length, thickness, decay speed, and color gradients to make the trail evolve visually as the balls bounce.

Under the Visuals tab in the Creator Studio sidebar, locate the Post-Processing section. Here, you can toggle the 'Bloom Effect' and adjust sliders for Intensity and Radius to amplify the trail's neon glow. You can also configure trail styles, switching between solid neon colors, dynamic gradients that phase over time, or fading particle arrays.

This maintains smooth 60fps performance even with hundreds of glowing trail segments on the canvas. If you do experience lag on mobile or older devices, check that hardware acceleration is enabled in your browser settings, or reduce the trail decay length.
