The MIDI Editor and AI Songs
Draw and edit MIDI on a piano roll, use several instruments, write a song with AI and enhance an existing one.
Opening the editor
The MIDI Editor section in the Sound, MIDI & Audio Hub has three buttons.
| Button | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Write a song with AI | Opens the editor on a blank page with the AI Song panel open. | Creator and up |
| New MIDI | Opens an empty piano roll at your last tempo (120 BPM the first time). | Same as the Hub |
| Edit Active | Opens the active track for editing. Greyed out unless the active track is a MIDI. The line below shows "Editing <name> · N notes". | Same as the Hub |
Toolbar
The toolbar along the top of the editor.
| Control | What it does | Range / options |
|---|---|---|
| Play / Stop | Plays the piano roll. Click the ruler to start from a point. | Space bar |
| BPM | Tempo of the whole piece. Files with tempo changes are flattened to one tempo (you see "Tempo flattened"). | 20 to 400, default 120 |
| Draw / Select | Draw: click and drag to add notes. Select: pick notes to move, resize or delete. | Two tools |
| Snap | Grid for placing notes. | 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/8T, 1/16T |
| Zoom out / Zoom in | Zooms the timeline. | Buttons |
| Undo / Redo / Delete | Edit history and deleting selected notes. | Buttons |
| Export .mid | Downloads the piece as a standard MIDI file. | Button |
| Save & Apply | Saves to your library and makes it the active track. Editing a track you do not own saves your own copy and leaves the original untouched. | Button |
Technical parameters
- Right-click a note to delete it.
- Shortcuts: Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y redo, Ctrl+C copy, Ctrl+X cut, Ctrl+V paste, Ctrl+D duplicate, Ctrl+A select all, Delete or Backspace delete, Space play, Escape close (closes an open AI panel first). On a Mac use Cmd.
- A velocity lane under the roll sets how hard each note is played.
Tracks and instruments
The Tracks panel lists each part with its colour and note count. Add track creates a new one; the bin removes one (you always keep at least one). Click a name to rename it.
| Per-track control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Instrument | Over 130 instruments: pianos, organs, guitars, basses, strings, choirs, brass, reeds, pipes, synth leads and pads, sound effects, world instruments, percussion, and a Drum Kit. |
| Mute | Silences the track while you edit. |
| Solo | Plays only this track (and other soloed tracks). |
AI Song (Creator and up)
The AI Song button in the editor opens a panel that writes a complete original instrumental song straight onto the piano roll. If there are notes already, you are asked first, and Ctrl+Z brings them back.
After a song is written, the panel shows its key, tempo, time signature, length, sections and instruments. Reshuffle arrangement keeps the same song but gives it a new performance, and it does not count toward your limits. The panel shows how many songs you have left today and this month.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Style | The genre to write in. |
| Mood | Happy, melancholy, dreamy, tense, triumphant, playful, nostalgic, mysterious, calm, aggressive, romantic or eerie. |
| Arrangement | How many parts and how busy the backing is. |
| Describe it (optional) | A short note, for example "slow and hopeful, builds to a big finish". |
| Generate | Writes the song. |
| Dice button | Ignores the settings above and writes something at random. |
Enhance (Pro)
Enhance improves the song on the piano roll while keeping its tune. It needs some notes first. Press Suggest improvements (optionally with a request in Ask for something specific, such as "make the drop hit harder, add a bass, jazzier chords"). The panel lists ideas marked Reimagine or Layer; tap one to apply it. Ctrl+Z undoes it and Revert to original goes back to where you started. The panel shows how many edits you have left today and this month.
