Marble Run 3D Mode
A marble descends a 3D course built from your song, and every platform it lands on is part of a real instrument. Every control in Marble 3D settings, explained. (Pro)
What Marble Run 3D Does
Marble Run 3D turns a song into a course. The notes are laid out as platforms down a tall wall, placed so the marble lands on one at the exact moment each note plays. Nothing is pushed to stay in time: the course is built from the timing, so the sync holds at any frame rate and in every export.
Every platform is part of a real instrument: a piano key, a xylophone bar, a drum, an organ pipe, a string, a bell or a synth pad. The element the marble lands on lights up and sounds as it is struck, so the viewer sees where every note comes from.
The marble needs notes to build its course, so the mode plays a MIDI file or a built-in melody. An audio file has no notes, and the top of the panel says so. A short built-in tune repeats until it fills the clip, and a MIDI or library song plays once from start to finish.
Tip
- Long rests never leave the marble hanging in the air. It rolls down a steel channel until the next note.
- The first line of the panel shows how many notes the course has, so you can check a song before you change anything else.
Plans, Panels and Basics
Marble 3D settings is one panel on the Engine tab and needs Pro. Anyone can open Marble Run 3D, watch it and export it. Camera, lighting, shadows and grade are on the shared 3D tab, whose sections need Pro.
Basics, the first item on the Studio rail, shows a short list of the settings that change the video the most, under Mode settings. Engine on the rail shows every control the mode has, in its own collapsible sections, and the mode's own sounds are in the Audio section. Both edit the same settings, so a change in one shows up in the other.
Technical parameters
- Basics shows: Instrument, Course path, Wander width (1 to 5, only for the Randomized and Random sweeps paths), Bounce style (Smooth hop or Real gravity), Travel per note (40 to 300, only for Smooth hop), Bounce angle (0 to 4) and Playback speed (0.05 to 2.5).
The Instrument
Instrument picks what the platforms are. Auto (match my instrument) builds the family of the instrument you are hearing, so what you see is what you hear. Picking a family also switches the sound to an instrument of that family, so the screen never shows drums while you hear a piano. The line under the picker says what is playing and what it is built as.
| Option | What the marble lands on | Sound it switches to |
|---|---|---|
| Auto (match my instrument) | The family of the instrument you are hearing. The default. | Keeps your sound |
| Piano keys | Piano keys that press down when struck. | Grand piano |
| Xylophone bars | Bars over resonator tubes, longer for lower notes. | Xylophone |
| Drums | Drum heads that pulse on every hit. | Melodic tom |
| Organ pipes | Pipes behind each landing lip, taller for lower notes. | Church organ |
| Strings | Fretboards with strings that vibrate after the pluck. | Nylon guitar |
| Bells | Hanging tubular bells. | Tubular bells |
| Synth pads | Glowing pads, for electronic sounds. | New age pad |
The Course
Where the platforms sit and how the marble travels between them. The timing never changes: every path and bounce style lands on the same notes at the same moments. A control that does not apply to the current path or bounce style stays in place, greyed out, and its ⓘ says why.
| Setting | What it does | Range / default | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Course path | The left-to-right shape of the descent. See Course Paths below. | Default Randomized (true scatter) | |
| Bounce style | Curve (smooth hop): a gentle arc, and the marble leaves each platform at the speed it lands on the next. Gravity (real physics): a true parabola, bouncing side to side off angled ledges. | Default Curve (smooth hop) | Curve is the calmer of the two. |
| Column width | How wide the column the course runs down is. | 400 to 1600, step 20, default 820 | |
| Wander width (× column) | How far past the column the Randomized and Random sweeps paths may roam. | 1 to 5, step 0.1, default 2.4 | Only those two paths use it. |
| Travel per note (spacing + speed) | Curve only. The distance between platforms, which also sets how fast the marble moves. | 40 to 300, step 5, default 115 | Higher spreads the platforms out, and the marble moves faster. |
| Element spacing | Gravity only. How far the marble drops for each note. | 60 to 420, step 5, default 140 | Lower slows the fall without changing the tempo of the song. |
| Side travel (bounce angle) | How much of each hop goes sideways rather than down. It also sets the angle of each ledge. | 0 to 4, step 0.1, default 2.4 | |
| Curve depth | Curve only. How deep the arc between two platforms bows. | 0 to 0.9, step 0.02, default 0.35 | |
| Bounce height | Gravity only. How high the marble hops off each ledge. | 0 to 0.6, step 0.02, default 0.12 | |
| Element length | The size of each instrument element. | 80 to 260, step 5, default 130 | Size never changes the timing. |
| Distance from wall | How far the instrument stands off the back wall. | 6 to 160, step 2, default 30 | Keep it low. The further out, the fainter the shadows on the wall. |
| Playback speed | Plays the whole run faster or slower, the song included. | 0.05 to 2.5, step 0.05, default 1 | At 1 the song plays at its real tempo. |
Course Paths
Every path plays the same notes at the same moments. Only the left-to-right placement of the platforms changes. The random paths follow the seed, so the same seed always builds the same course and the export matches the preview.
| Course path | Shape |
|---|---|
| Serpentine (wide sweep) | Travels to one side, turns, and sweeps back. The widest motion. |
| Zigzag (tight) | Turns on every note, in a narrow column. |
| Straight down | Each platform sits directly under the last. |
| Straight + slight random | Nearly vertical, nudged a little on every note. |
| Randomized (true scatter) | A new direction on every note, with no visible pattern. The default. |
| Random sweeps (long crossings) | Long crossings of random length and steepness. Covers more ground than Randomized. |
| Sine wave | One smooth wave down the column. The calmest shaped path. |
| Spiral (funnel in and out) | A wave that narrows to a tight column and opens back out. |
| Braid (weave) | Two waves at different speeds, so the path weaves instead of repeating. |
| Organic drift | A slow, smooth meander with no sharp turns. |
| Staircase | Three notes across, one back, over and over. |
Steel Channel (Long Rests)
A long rest in the song would leave the marble falling a long way or floating in the air. With Bridge long rests on, it rolls down a curved steel channel instead and comes off it on the next note.
| Setting | What it does | Range / default | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridge long rests | The marble rolls down a curved steel channel through long rests. | On/off, default on | |
| Channel threshold (x median gap) | How long a rest must be, compared with the usual gap between notes in the song, before it gets a channel. | 3 to 8, step 0.1, default 3.5 | Lower it for more channels, raise it for fewer. |
| Long-rest descent | Gravity only. How steeply the channel drops. | 0 to 1, step 0.02, default 0.22 | |
| Rail thickness | How thick the rails of the channel are. | 2 to 14, step 0.5, default 7 | |
| Rail color | The colour of the channel. | Default steel grey (#9AA4B2) |
Medley
Medley mode chains several songs into one descent. Each song is a section with its own instrument, and the marble rides the rail through the gap between two sections. Turn on Medley mode, then press Add section for each song. The arrows change the order, Duplicate copies a section (the quick way to play the next part of the same song on another instrument), and the bin removes it. Under each song the panel shows how many notes and seconds it has, or says when it is an audio-only track with no notes.
| Setting | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| Song | The song this section plays. | Any song in your library |
| Instrument | The instrument for this section. Picking a family switches its sound too. | Default Auto (match my instrument) |
| Start into song (0 = beginning) | Where in the song the section starts, in sec, notes or %. | Default 0 sec |
| Play length (0 = to the end) | How much of the song the section plays, in sec, notes or %. | Default 0, to the end |
| Gap after (sec, marble rides the rail) | Seconds of rail before the next section starts. | 0 to 20, step 0.2, default 1.6 |
| Accent color, Label color | The accent of this section and the colour of its label. | Default light blue (#38BDF8) |
| 3D label (shown where this section starts) | A word or a name standing in the scene where the section begins. | Up to 40 characters |
| Show section labels in 3D | Shows or hides the label of every section. | On/off, default on |
Seamless Loop
Loop mode makes the clip end exactly where it starts, so it loops with no visible cut. The run begins and ends on a short straight rail, and the clip is cut in the middle of it. Turning Loop mode on also turns off Auto rotate on the 3D tab, which would drift across the seam. While Loop mode is on, Clip length is greyed out: the loop sets the length, and a loop never ends.
| Setting | What it does | Range / default | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loop mode | The clip ends where it starts. | On/off, default off | |
| Loop length from | Studio clip length (top bar), A number of seconds, or A number of notes. | Default Studio clip length (top bar) | |
| Loop length (sec) | Used when Loop length from is A number of seconds. | 4 to 120, default 30 | |
| Loop length (notes) | Used when Loop length from is A number of notes. | 8 to 2000, default 200 | |
| Seam rail length (sec) | Seconds of straight rail at each end of the loop. | 1 to 8, step 0.2, default 2.6 | Longer gives the camera time to settle at the seam. |
3D Text and the Marble
3D text stands in the scene at a point along the course, so a title or a channel name is part of the world rather than a layer on top of it. Press Add 3D text for each one, and the bin removes it.
| Setting | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| Text | The words. | Up to 40 characters |
| Position (0 = start, 1 = end) | Where along the course the text stands. | 0 to 1. A first text starts at 0.1, later ones at 0.5 |
| Size | The size of the letters. | 20 to 900, default 190 |
| Offset X, Offset Y | Moves the text sideways, and up or down, from that point. | Steps of 10. A new text starts at 0 and 260 |
| Style | Solid letters, or Letters on a slab. | Default Solid letters |
| Turn (degrees) | Turns the text to face left or right. | -80 to 80, default 0 |
| Color, Slab color | The colour of the letters, and of the slab behind Letters on a slab. | Defaults: the accent colour, and dark brown (#2B1C12) |
| Marble radius | The size of the marble. | 10 to 60, default 26 |
| Marble finish | Chrome (mirror finish), Glass (refracts with hero glass on) or Neon (self-lit). | Default Glass |
| Marble color | The colour of the marble. | Default near white (#E8ECF4) |
Color and Scene
How the instrument lights up, and the wall it is mounted on. With the default Ignite, every element rests as dark metal, lights up when the marble strikes it and then fades, so the trail of lit elements traces the melody.
| Setting | What it does | Range / default | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Element color | Ignite (dark metal until struck), By pitch (rainbow across the range), or Fixed (accent color). | Default Ignite | |
| Resting color | Ignite only. The colour of an element before it is struck. | Default taupe (#6A5D4E) | |
| Ignites in | Ignite only. Its own note color (rainbow melody), or One accent color (metal + a single neon). | Default Its own note color | |
| Accent / flash color | The accent colour, and the flash on every strike. | Default light blue (#38BDF8) | |
| Glow fade (sec) | How long a struck element stays lit. | 0 to 8, step 0.1, default 2.2 | |
| Glow strength | How bright the glow of a strike is. | 0 to 5, step 0.1, default 1.7 | |
| Light spill (elements) | How many lit elements also cast coloured light on the scene. | 0 to 8, default 8 | Lower it if the preview is slow. |
| Light spill strength | How strong that light is. | 0 to 4, step 0.1, default 2 | |
| Wall density (decoration) | Extra decoration on the wall behind the course. | 0 to 1, step 0.05, default 0 | It looks best on a dark wall such as Black lacquer. |
| Back wall | The wall the instrument mounts on, and the mirror everything reflects in. | On/off, default on | |
| Wall finish | Smooth studio (plain, glossy, reflective), Frosted glass (soft, translucent), Concrete (matte, textured), Warm plaster (matte, textured, daylight) or Black lacquer (polished, mirrored, night). | Default Smooth studio | Each finish sets its own wall colour and comes with its own lighting. |
| Wall color | The colour of the wall. | Default grey (#767D88) |
Clip Length and Ending
A marble run is as long as its song. Limit video length ends the run at a set time instead, and the marble is destroyed on camera, so the video has a real ending. The panel shows how the run adds up, for example "This run: 28.8s of music + 1.2s ending = 30.0s". The ending sound is on the Audio tab, under Mode sounds.
| Setting | What it does | Range / default |
|---|---|---|
| Limit video length | Ends the run at a set time instead of playing the whole song. | On/off, default off |
| Length source | Follow the Studio clip length, or Custom length. | Default Follow the Studio clip length |
| Video length (sec) | Custom length only. How long the run is. | 3 to 180, default 60 |
| Destruction effect | Shatter, Explode, Confetti, Implode, Shockwave, Pixel Dissolve, or No Effect (just stop). | Default Shatter |
| Ending length (sec) | How long the ending lasts. | 0.3 to 4, step 0.1, default 1.2 |
| Play a sound | A stinger on the destruction, separate from the melody. Its Source is Sound effect / upload, MIDI / melody, or Sliced song. | On/off, default on, with Glass-Break |
The 3D Tab for Marble Run 3D
Camera, lighting, materials, background, shadows, grade and preview performance are on the shared 3D tab, which every 3D mode uses. Marble Run 3D adds one control there, Camera life, in Camera Moves: how much the camera drifts on its own, from 0 to 1, default 0.55. The camera always follows the marble down the course.
Tip
- Performance settings only change the live preview. Exports always render at full quality.
Recommended Setups
The strongest Marble Run 3D clips use a melody the viewer knows, so every strike is a note they recognise.
| Goal | Settings to use |
|---|---|
| A first video | The defaults with a MIDI song you know. Instrument on Auto, Course path Randomized. |
| One song, seven looks | Keep everything else and change only Instrument, once for each family. |
| A calm, readable descent | Course path Sine wave or Organic drift, Bounce style Curve, Playback speed 1. |
| A Short with an ending | Limit video length on, Follow the Studio clip length, Destruction effect Shatter. |
| A loop for the feed | Loop mode on, Loop length from Studio clip length (top bar). |
| A medley | Medley mode on, three sections, Gap after 1.6, a 3D label on each. |
| A night look | Wall finish Black lacquer, Ignites in One accent color. |
Common Problems
What to check when Marble Run 3D misbehaves.
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The panel says "No note data: pick a MIDI or built-in melody" | The song is an audio file, which has no notes for the marble to play. | Load a MIDI or a built-in melody on the Audio tab. |
| A short tune plays over and over | Built-in melodies are short, so they repeat to fill the clip. | Load a MIDI song for a run that plays a whole piece once. |
| The platforms do not match the sound | Instrument is set to a family, and the sound was changed on the Audio tab afterwards. | Set Instrument to Auto (match my instrument), or pick the family again. |
| The run is longer than the video | A MIDI song plays to its end. | Turn on Limit video length, or set a Play length on each medley section. |
| A slider is greyed out | It belongs to another path, bounce style or switch. | Read its ⓘ, which names what turns it on. Wander width, for example, only works with Randomized and Random sweeps. |
| Clip length is greyed out | Loop mode is on, and the loop sets the length. | Turn off Loop mode to use Limit video length. |
| The song plays slower or faster than it should | Playback speed is not 1. | Set Playback speed to 1. To slow the fall without changing the song, lower Travel per note (Curve) or Element spacing (Gravity). |
| The preview is slow on a phone | Every lit element that spills light adds work on each frame. | Lower Light spill (elements). Exports still render at full quality. |
